What is STARS?

Jobs in tourism, culture, leisure and hospitality make up the world’s largest industry. The Nottinghamshire STARS project is all about improving skills, training, attitude and retention within these exciting industries. Since August 2005 Nottinghamshire STARS has been based within Experience Nottinghamshire.

Nottinghamshire needs to offer exceptional quality of service and a world class experience that encourages repeat visits. Its' ambition is for word of mouth acclaim to entice first time visitors. Currently around one in five businesses in the industry suffers from skills shortages affecting over a third of employers in the industry. Current trends indicate that this shortage is set only to increase.

STARS works with employers and training providers. It aims to promote the rewarding career paths available. And address challenges faced by the industry – like the way people think of it, and staff turnover.

The STARS action plan focuses on six areas:

  • encouraging business and employers becoming ambassadors for the industry
  • targeting new recruits to the sector in Nottinghamshire
  • up-skilling the workforce in Nottinghamshire - quality matters
  • celebrating achievements of employees and businesses in Nottinghamshire
  • addressing skills shortages by coordinating training for the industry
  • improving the image of the industry in Nottinghamshire
